Embracing my roots : Mountains, Apples and Art
In my art, mountains( 산, SAN) are a big deal. Probably because Korea's mostly mountains, like 70% of it. Then there's my hometown, Daegu, which is all nestled in a basin surrounded by mountains. It's also known as the 'city of apples,' so I've always had this thing for apples in my art, ever since I started. Besides mountains and apples, I'm also into the moon and tigers. I'll chat more about those later on.

A little milestone
I'm thrilled to share my very first English interview with Formation Art, a dedicated art blogger. Participating in this interview was a reflective journey for me. It provided a valuable moment to delve into the origins of my Dansaekhwa-inspired practice.
Living in Singapore for nearly two decades, a landscape devoid of mountains and snow, has uniquely influenced my artwork. Despite this, my "SAN" series, particularly in white and beige hues, captures an ethereal snow-like effect that feels both serene and introspective.
I invite you to spend a few minutes to read the interview at Formation Art. I would appreciate any feedback and thoughts you might have!

My DIY discovery
On my blog today, I'd like to address a recurring question that comes up frequently in my interactions with Koreans, including galleries, curators, and the general audience. Unlike in international art circles, where my educational background rarely draws inquiry, I am often asked by Koreans, "Which art school did you graduate from?" My response : "Self-taught"
My journey into the world of art began unexpectedly when my daughter enrolled at the School of the Arts Singapore (SOTA). Inspired by her academic path, I started experimenting with her old 4B pencils and sketchbooks. This marked the beginning of my ongoing exploration into art. Prior to my artistic career, I delved into various entrepreneurial endeavors, including publishing magazines, managing communications and PR, and even running an espresso bar in the CBD of Singapore. I taught myself the ropes in all these businesses, each of which served as a conduit for my creative expression.
As an inherently introverted individual, I spend much time deeply immersed in thought and creation within the solitude of my studio. This year, I am committed to making my art more publicly accessible than ever before.
If you are a gallerist, curator, or an art enthusiast interested in exploring my latest portfolio, I warmly invite you to reach out to me at hannamikim@gmail.com with your details. I am eager to connect and share the artworks that I have passionately crafted in solitude, and I look forward to engaging more deeply with the broader art community.
